General settings

Firm settings → General holds your firm's identity and the defaults the rest of Mattersimple uses. You need the Update firm settings permission. Each section saves on its own.

Your firm

  • Firm name, Timezone and Firm description. The timezone is the clock for every date and time in your firm, including reminders and invoice dates.
  • Logo and Favicon (the small icon in browser tabs).

Location and currency

  • Country: the United States or Canada. If you connect Stripe, your Stripe account is opened in this country, and the country and currency can't change after that.
  • State (US) or Province or territory (Canada): where your firm practises. It's required, and Quebec isn't available (see Where Mattersimple is available). When you change country, pick a state or province in the new one before saving. You can change it even after connecting Stripe.
  • Currency: what your invoices are billed in. Canadian firms can choose CAD or USD.

Save location and currency saves all three together.

Regional format

How dates, numbers and prices are written, such as 1,234.56. Mattersimple itself stays in English.

Taxes

The taxes new invoices start with. You can still change them on each invoice.

  • Taxes: up to two, each with a Name (such as GST, HST or PST), a Rate (%) and an optional Registration number. Registration numbers print under your firm's name on every invoice that charges that tax.
  • In Canada, your province (from Location and currency) shows the usual taxes on legal services there. Use these taxes fills them in: HST in Ontario and the Atlantic provinces, GST in Alberta and the territories, and GST plus PST (RST in Manitoba) in British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Check the rates against the CRA and your province before relying on them.

If you're registered for GST/HST, the CRA requires your registration number on invoices of $30 or more. Most US states don't tax legal services, so US firms start with no taxes. Add one if yours does.

Invoices already created keep the taxes they were made with. Invoices you haven't sent yet print your current registration numbers, which are fixed when the invoice is sent.

Security

Require two-factor authentication: everyone in the firm must use two-factor authentication. See Requiring two-factor for your whole firm.

Contact and office details

  • Contact email address: where messages from your website's contact form are sent. Leave it blank to use the owner's email. It's also given to clients as your firm's email on payment receipts.
  • Office details: Phone, Address line 1 and 2, Office hours, Legal name and Year established. Themes show them on your site, for example in the header, footer and contact page. Leave a field empty to hide it. Search engines read them too, together with your country, province or state, logo and social links, so a complete, accurate set helps your firm show up in local searches.
  • Social links: your firm's profiles, which themes show, for example in the footer.

Invoices

  • Payment terms (days): how long clients have to pay. An invoice is due this many days after it's sent; 0 means due on receipt.
  • Default invoice notes: printed at the bottom of each new invoice, and changeable per invoice.
  • Remind clients about overdue invoices: emails a reminder on the due date and 7 and 14 days later while a balance is left. See Automatic reminders.

Client portal

Turn on the client portal. See Turning on the client portal.

Domains

Your site's address. See Your website address and custom domains.

SEO

The Default page title, Meta description and Social image search engines and social networks use for your site's pages, unless a page sets its own.
