Custom fields

Custom fields are your own extra fields on matters, contacts, practice groups, practice areas, articles and article categories, such as "Referral source" on matters or "Highlights" on practice groups. Manage them under Firm settings → Custom fields (needs Update firm settings).

Add a field

  1. Click Add field for the kind of record.
  2. Enter a Label and a Key. The key is how themes and exports refer to the field, and can't change once it's added.
  3. Choose the Type: text, long text, rich text, number, yes / no, date, link, dropdown (with Choices) or list (with Sub-fields). The type can't change later either.
  4. Add Help text (staff see it by hovering or tapping the ⓘ beside the field's label), and tick Required if it must be filled in.
  5. Save.

Where they show

  • Matters and contacts: edited on the record's edit page, and shown read-only on its Custom fields tab. Changes are recorded in the audit trail. They never reach the client portal or your website.
  • Practice groups and areas, articles and article categories: edited with the record, and available to your theme to show on your website.

Required fields

A required field must be filled in on every form that saves it. Forms that create a matter or a company in a pop-up only show the required fields. Practice group and area fields are only required while the record is on the site, and article fields only when publishing. Yes / no fields are never required.

Deleting a field

Deleting a field hides it and its values everywhere.
