The audit trail
The audit trail is a permanent record of who did what to your firm's matters and contacts, and when. It helps you answer questions from clients, insurers and regulators.
What's recorded
- Every change to a matter or contact, with the old and new values.
- Every addition, change and deletion of anything on them: notes, communications, documents, document requests, tasks, events, time and expenses, invoices and payments.
- Every download of a file on them, by your staff or by a client in the portal.
Entries record the person, the time and what changed. They never contain the text of notes, messages or documents. Entries can't be edited or deleted, and are kept for as long as your firm exists.
Where to see it
Open the Audit trail tab on a matter or contact. You need the View audit trails permission (the owner always has it) and to be able to see the matter or contact.
What you see
The trail only shows what you're allowed to see: invoice entries need invoice access, entries from matters you can't see are left out of a contact's trail, and other people's private tasks and events show without their details.
