Who can see and edit a matter

Matters often hold sensitive information, so each one decides who in your firm can see it.

Always

  • The firm owner sees every matter.
  • The matter's lead lawyers (responsible and originating) always see it, and can't be walled off.
  • Its responsible staff see it.

Access setting

Under Who can see this matter on the edit page, choose:

  • Everyone in the firm: members with the View any matter permission see it.
  • Specific users: only the members you pick (plus the people above).
  • Specific user groups: only members of the user groups you pick.

Members without View any matter only see the matters they're on or have been given.

Ethical wall

The Ethical wall blocks named members from a matter, whatever their role or access. Use it when someone has a conflict of interest. The owner and the lead lawyers can't be walled off, and only they can change the wall. Walled-off members are listed on the matter's dashboard.

What follows from it

Everything on a matter follows its access: its notes, documents, communications, tasks, events, time and invoices. A contact's page never shows records from a matter you can't see.

Seeing a matter isn't the same as changing it: see Editing a matter.
